The Beat that Built a Movement
The Washington Tattoo was born in 2018, evolving over a decade from inspiration nurtured by Tattoo founder and CEO Mark Reilly. A veteran and world class drummer in his own right, Mark had seen firsthand the power of music as a force for good.
After years performing at military tattoos around the world, Mark had seen the way these programs united, inspired, and moved global audiences. Living near Washington, D.C., he saw an opportunity to build something extraordinary right on his doorstep.
Mark surrounded himself with former colleagues and friends—veterans and cultural leaders—who shared his vision for exceptional miliary musical performances designed to be a unifying voice at the intersection of music, history, and national identity.
The Washington Tattoo, however, was never just about the music.
From day one, the goal was to create extraordinary musical performances as a vehicle for change—unique, performances that would generate much needed funds to support active-duty service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. This support helps shine a light on the challenges faced by veterans and first responders with PTSD and TBI
What started as a modest performance in 2018 has grown into a cultural movement. In just seven years, The Washington Tattoo has gone from small showcases to high-profile embassy performances to a sold-out flagship event in 2025, drawing 1,500+ audience members and 200+ performers.
And we’re just getting started.
In 2026, we’re proud to be an official partner of the America 250 celebrations, bringing our mission and our music to an even bigger stage.
