The Beat that Built a Movement

The Washington Tattoo was founded on a shared vision between lifelong friends, fellow Soldiers, and master musicians—Billy White and Mark Reilly—both of whom served with distinction in the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the official escort to the President of the United States.

Forged over decades of service, their partnership reflects not only musical excellence, but a deep understanding of the ceremonial, historical, and human dimensions of military life. Within the Old Guard, they stood at the center of America’s most visible national traditions

After years performing at military tattoos around the world, Billy and Mark had seen the way these programs united, inspired, and moved global audiences. Living near Washington, D.C., they saw an opportunity to build something extraordinary right on their doorstep.

Billy and Mark surrounded themselves with former colleagues and friends—veterans and cultural leaders—who shared their vision for exceptional military musical performances designed to be a unifying voice at the intersection of music, history, and national identity.

The Washington Tattoo, however, was never just about the music.

From day one, the goal was to create extraordinary musical performances as a vehicle for change—unique, performances that would generate much needed funds to support active-duty service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. This support helps shine a light on the challenges faced by veterans and first responders with PTSD and TBI

What started as a modest performance in 2018 has grown into a cultural movement. In just seven years, The Washington Tattoo has gone from small showcases to high-profile embassy performances to a sold-out flagship event in 2025, drawing 1,500+ audience members and 200+ performers.

And we’re just getting started.

In 2026, we’re proud to be an official partner of the America 250 celebrations, bringing our mission and our music to an even bigger stage.
