What is a tattoo?

A performing arts event consisting of music, marching, dance, and various other displays performed by military and civilian personnel.

Did you know?

The word “tattoo” comes from a Dutch phrase “doe den tap toe,” which means “turn off the tap.”

In the 1600s, military drummers would march through towns playing a signal in the evening to tell soldiers to finish their drinks and return to base. Over time, that drum signal became a full performance. Eventually, the word “tattoo” came to mean a military music event. The annual Tattoo is a reflection of this tradition.
